Residential Life Updates - November 2, 2022

Community Messages

Good afternoon -

It’s been a month since we shared our exciting news about our improved housing selection processes. Many of you attended our information sessions and open houses.  We will continue to offer open office hours for you to connect with a member of our staff to discuss our various processes. We remain committed to enhancing your residential experience and welcome your feedback to ensure your voice is heard.

Brook Street Residence Halls

We would like to use this opportunity to share information about the two new residence halls, currently under construction along Brook Street.  Please take a moment to visit our website to learn more about the buildings, including access to the floor plans and a construction camera to monitor the progress of the project.

Theme Communities

We are also very pleased and excited to announce that three new theme communities will be available to students for the 2023-2024 academic year - Sustainability, Interfaith, and Civic Engagement.  All three will be located in the new Brook Street residence halls, in partnership with the Associate Provost of Sustainability, the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life, and the Swearer Center.  These programs will be added to our existing partnerships with BeWell Health Promotions in support of our wellness community at Sternlicht Commons, as well as Dean Garcia’s work with the recovery community at 219 Bowen.

Religious Requests

The Office of Residential Life, in consultation with additional offices as appropriate, such as the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life, reviews requests for specific features in a housing assignment based on religious beliefs, observances, and practices and determines the appropriate housing assignment. The application to submit religious requests is now available on the housing portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, seniors participating in the fall selection process are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible

Winter Break

Later this week, our office will share information about winter break housing. Please be sure to review the information provided so that you are aware of your options at the end of the fall term.  As a reminder, residence halls close on December 22, 2022 at 12pm and reopen for the spring term on January 21, 2023 at 8am.

We hope that the information provided today will help you better prepare for your residential experience for the next academic year.  If you have any questions about this or other residential-related matters, please feel free to contact us at res_life@brown.edu

Best,

Brenda Ice (she/her/hers)
