Residential Life posts current opening, closing and arrival information on the Moving In and Moving Out pages. Dates and instructions vary by semester and student population, so students should review the information for their specific term.

Students should first check the StarRez Housing Portal for applications, forms, assignment details and other available housing information. If they still have questions or need additional assistance, they may contact Residential Life.

Room types, layouts, and furnishings vary by building, and authenticated floor plans may be available through Brown’s campus map.  Types of furnishings can be viewed on the Room Furnishing page. XL Twin mattresses (38” x 80”) are standard in each room.

Students should review the What to Bring and Restricted Items pages before purchasing appliances, furniture or decorations. Restrictions apply to certain cooking devices, electrical equipment, air conditioners and other potentially unsafe items.

Brown student leaders have prepared a Google doc that contains a very detailed packing list. 

For physical building or room issues, the right contact depends on the type of problem:

• Locks or keys: Call the Residential Life Key Office at 401-863-3502. The Key Office is open 24/7, including weekends, holidays and breaks.
• Furniture: Email the Residential Facilities Team at reslife_facilities@brown.edu. 
• Paint, room cleanliness, built-in fixtures, large appliances, window blinds, flooring, electrical or water issues: Submit a Facilities Management Work Order online, scan the QR code on your room signage or call 401-863-7800. This includes issues with sinks, toilets, ovens, full-size refrigerators and similar fixtures or appliances.
• Laundry machines: Submit a service request to CSC ServiceWorks by scanning the QR code on the machine or using their service request website.

If you are locked outside without a phone, blue light phones are available for use.

Brown ID Cards provide exterior residence hall access, while room access generally requires a physical key. If your Brown ID Card has been lost or stolen, visit the Brown Card website for instructions.

Students seeking disability-related housing accommodations must register with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and submit an accommodation request with supporting documentation from a qualified healthcare provider through the SAS online system, Accommodate. SAS will review the request and coordinate with Residential Life on appropriate housing arrangements for approved accommodations.

Students requesting a religious housing accommodation should also follow the housing accommodation request process outlined by Residential Life.
