Residential Life

The residence halls will close at 12pm ET on Friday, December 22, following the conclusion, on Thursday, of the final exam period. All card access will be disabled at that time, except for students with  prior approval to remain on campus. Students who will return to their current housing assignment in the spring should keep their room key; their personal belongings can remain in their room over winter break. Students who will not return to on-campus housing in the spring must fully vacate their fall housing assignment and return their room key no later than Friday, December 22 (when the halls close).

Student Requests

Students who need to stay late at the end of the Fall semester, arrive early at the beginning of the Spring semester, or remain in on-campus housing for the entire Winter Break are required to fill out the Winter Break Housing form, which will be available from November 16 to December 7, 2023.

Students do not need to complete the Winter Break Housing form if they do not plan to live on-campus between December 22 and January 20.

Students living on campus in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Eligible Eligible Eligible
Students only living on campus in Fall 2023 Eligible
Students only living on campus in Spring 2024   Eligible

Student housing requests will be considered based on one of the following criteria: travel challenges, unsafe home environment, housing insecurity, athletic programs, student employment, sponsored program/research, Brown Winter Session, or RISD Wintersession. Requests outside of those conditions or without sponsorship will be reviewed but may not be approved.

Pricing and billing

Housing during the winter break period costs $45 per day for individual requests. Charges will be posted to student accounts beginning in mid-December and on a rolling basis thereafter. The charges will appear on the student’s account under the Winter term as extended housing charges.

Students who will remain on campus due to a University-sponsored activity (e.g. on-campus employment or athletic competition) and who have their housing costs sponsored by a department may note that in the Winter Break Housing Form. The Office of Residential Life will confirm with that department 1) whether they are sponsoring the housing costs and 2) the specific dates being sponsored. Fully sponsored students will see a $40 extended housing charge and $40 credit appear on their account under the Winter term. If a student arrives outside the date(s) noted by their sponsor, that student is responsible for all housing charges for the non-sponsored days at a rate of $45 per day.

Domestic Students who are unable to return home over winter break and need financial assistance with on-campus housing and/or meals, need to schedule a financial advising appointment with the College here. Please note that students must also be separately approved to stay on campus by Residential Life. Students will need to schedule a financial advising appointment no later than Friday, December 15. Questions regarding EGAP Winter housing and meal support should be directed to financial_advising@brown.edu.

International students studying on an F-1 visa in need of financial assistance for on-campus housing and/or meals during the winter session should complete this form by December 11.  Financial assistance is prioritized for students with emergent or unexpected situations in conjunction with their financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Please note that completion of this form does not guarantee approval for financial assistance and you must also be separately approved to stay on campus by Residential Life. More information can be found on the form. International students with questions should contact internationaladvising@brown.edu.

Meals

Fall meal plan access is available through the end of the exam period on December 21. Please note that approval for winter break housing does not include winter break meal services. Students interested in meal services during the winter break period should refer to the Dining Services website or contact Dining Services directly at dining_services@brown.edu or 401-863-3343.

Departmental Requests

Departments intending to sponsor students during the extended housing period must complete this brief form and upload the Winter Housing 2023 - 2024 Sponsoring Department Form to it no later than 12pm on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

The student Winter Break Housing Request form will go live on November 16 and has a priority deadline of December 7. The Office of Residential Life will cross reference their responses with the information provided by departments to ensure each student is accounted for and their housing dates are accurately recorded. All students who need housing during the winter break period, including those being sponsored by departments, must fill out this form.

The departmental cost of this housing is $40 per student through Spring 2024. Please note that beginning with FY25 Summer Session, Residential Life has established room rates for the winter and summer based on a daily rate of $45. This daily rate applies to extended stay and early arrival housing.

Sponsoring departments with questions about this process can email res_life@brown.edu for assistance.

Meal coverage is coordinated through Dining Services, please contact dining_services.brown.edu to make and/or confirm arrangements.
