Early Arrival Request Process [Returning Students]

Community Messages

Dear Students

The Office of Residential Life is excited to welcome our new and continuing students to Brown in just a few weeks. This email contains important information about our early arrival housing request process.

As a reminder, returning students are scheduled to arrive on Saturday, September 2.

If you do not require early arrival housing, no action is required until move-in time slots become available in early August.

Students assigned to on-campus housing who are participating in one of the following programs or have one of the following criteria may request to arrive prior to their official move-in day: pre-orientation programs, fall athletic programs, student employment, sponsored program/research, or international travel limitations. Requests outside of those conditions and without sponsorship are subject to further review and may not be approved.

Sponsors are University departments or units who manage programs that require students to arrive prior to the start of the semester. Sponsors are generally responsible for payment; students without a sponsor are responsible for payment. If you would like to be considered for financial support, there is information about consideration for financial assistance on the form.

To request an early arrival date, you must complete the Early Arrival form, located within the Forms process on our housing portal, prior to the priority deadline of August 7 at 11:59pm ET.  While submissions received after this date may be considered, they are subject to additional review and may not be approved.

All requests will be verified with the sponsoring department or staff. Confirmation notices will be sent by our office, on a rolling basis, beginning Monday, August 8.

Please note that early arrival requests are limited to students with fall housing assignments ONLY. We cannot offer temporary housing to students studying abroad in the fall or living off-campus. Requests by returning students to return on August 30 are subject to further review and may not be approved as it is our new student move-in day.

Residential construction & renovation activities may restrict early arrival requests for residents of the new Brook Street Residence Halls (Chen Family Hall and Danoff Hall) and Grad Center C. Residents of the Brook Street Residence Halls may request to arrive no earlier than August 11 and residents of Grad Center C may request to arrive no earlier than August 17 (subject to approval).

Students arriving early should be aware that they are on campus prior to the start of the semester and some services and resources may not be available. For example, fall meal plans do not start until August 30 at dinner service (4pm). All meal plan questions should be directed to dining_services@brown.edu.

If you have any questions about when you should arrive, please contact your sponsor.  All other questions can be directed to  res_life@brown.edu

Sincerely,
