Residential Peer Leader (RPL) 2013-2014

Thank you for your interest in the Residential Peer Leader (RPL) Position for the 2013-2014 academic year!  The RPL positions at Brown University are exciting and rewarding experiences. Through team work and other leadership opportunities, you will hone your organizational and interpersonal skill sets while adding a position that truly stands out on your resume, highlighting your understanding of the human experience. Please familiarize yourself with the job descriptions and take a few moments to talk with several current peer counselors about their experiences as and choice to become a part of the Residential Life and Third World Center team.

Who can apply?:

In order to be selected as an RPL you must be in good academic and judicial standing with the University. Also, candidates who are selected are required to return early for the fall and spring semesters to complete staff training. Please see specific job descriptions for more details.

Selection Timeline

  • Application Due: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by 11:59 pm
  • Interviews: February 11-15, 2013
    • All interviews will be held in the Office of Residential Life in Grad Center E 1st floor (42 Charlesfield Street).
  • Group Process: Sunday, February 10, 2013, 3-6 PM, Monday, February 11, 2013, 6-9 PM, and Tuesday, February 12, 2012, 6-9 PM
    • There are a limited number of spaces available during each session and sign up is first come first serve. Attendance at one is required for all applicants.
  • Selection letters sent via student email: On February 22, 2013
  • Decision to accept or decline deadline: Thursday, March 7, 2013

Residential Peer Leader Application 2013-2014

Instructions:

  1. The RPL application has multiple parts. Please make sure to complete all portions in order to be considered. You will not be able to edit your application once it is submitted.
  2. Please make sure to sign up for an RPL interview at the Grad Center EFront Desk.
  3. Questions regarding MPC applications – please contact Shane Lloyd
  4. Questions regarding all other RPL applications – please contact Vince Greer

Part I: Short Answer Questions

These questions are a major component of your application.  To provide you with some time to prepare your responses before beginning your application (reminder: once you begin to apply, you must complete the application, as you cannot go back to edit it), we are including them below.
Four (4) of the following six (6) questions are required. Questions 1-3 are mandatory, but you may choose between questions 4 and 6. WPC and MPC candidates are required to answer question 5. Responses should be single-spaced, and no more 250 words.

  1. How would becoming an RPL enrich your experience at Brown? (Required of all applicants)
  2. How do you envision your role in the residence halls as an MPC, WPC, RC, or CA particularly?  How do you envision your role in the larger Brown community?  Give concrete examples of outreach activities and actions that you will take to build a community. (Required of all applicants)
  3. Please take a minute to identify a population you feel is marginalized within the context of Brown University.  What do you think is the most pressing issue for that population?  How can it be addressed?  Please be specific. (Required of all applicants)
  4. What is the role you typically play on a team?  How do you typically contribute to the success of a project?  How will these attributes enhance the RPL community? (Optional for all applicants)
  5. Please share a time when you were part of a situation where you think you demonstrated skills that would make you a good Women Peer Counselor or Minority Peer Counselor? (Required for MPC and WPC candidates)
  6. Is there anything else we need to know? (Optional for all applicants)

Part II: Application Form

In order to access this the application you must be logged into your Brown University Gmail account before opening the application form. The application is a secure form best accessed through Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer.

Part III: Letters of Recommendation

  1. Please get THREE (3) letters of recommendation to complete your application. Two (2) letters of recommendation need to speak to your work ethic as an employee and/or as a student. They can be from a current/former employer or a professor/teacher. One (1) letter of recommendation needs to be from a current or former MPC, RC, WPC or CD.
