Off Campus Living at Brown

Do not sign a lease until you have received written permission to live off campus from the Office of Residential Life via e-mail.

All current undergraduate students wishing to live off-campus must apply for off-campus permission by completing an Off-Campus Application and submitting it to the Office of Residential Life by the required deadline, this includes all undergraduates wishing to live in Brown-owned off-campus residences. Off-campus permission is both a group and an individual process and is not granted automatically. More information on the treatment and formation of groups is available at the beginning of the application. Approval is granted until a student graduates from the University or takes a leave of absence. Students who receive permission and then take a leave of absence or study abroad during Fall 2014 will have their permission cancelled and will need to reside on-campus upon their return to campus in Spring 2015. Permission will not be granted for just the Spring 2015 semester. Married students or students commuting from the home of a parent or legal guardian are not required to apply for off-campus permission.

Priority for off-campus permission is given to applications received by the deadline from next year's rising seniors.

Undergraduates applying for permission to live off-campus are subject to the following:

  1. Undergraduates who study away for a semester or year in a Brown approved study program, for which academic credit is given, will receive on-campus residency credit equal to the number of semesters of tuition credit awarded.
  2. Undergraduates who have taken a leave of absence for any reason other than a Brown approved study program will not receive on-campus residency credit.
  3. The University reserves the right to deny an application for off-campus permission to a student who has a record of a violation of the Student Disciplinary Code or other University Rules and Regulations.

Undergraduates receiving permission to live off-campus are subject to the following:

  1. The formal acceptance of off-campus permission on the part of the student is final and binding for the next full academic year.
  2. All students living off-campus are required to pay the non-resident fee.
  3. Commuting: Commuting students are students living at home with their parent or guardian (within a 30-mile or 30- minute radius) who choose to commute to the University. This is not the same as living off campus, and does not require off-campus permission. All commuting students are required to register with the University and to pay the non-resident fee.

Married Students

Any undergraduate who will be living with his/her spouse in the Providence area must register at the Office of Residential Life (Graduate Center E, 42 Charlesfield St.). All married students are required to pay the non-resident fee.

BACH/Commuter/Non-Resident Fee

The operating budget for the Residential Life Office includes expenses for a number of institutional activities that are not strictly speaking "housing related." However, as a residential college, these activities are for all students regardless of where they live. The operating expenses for the Haffenreffer Estate and Outing Reservations Facility, the operating budget for the Student Activities Office and the building expenses for Faunce House are all included in the Residential Life budget. In addition, a significant portion of the operating budget for the Office of Student Life is funded through the Residential Life budget. Because of this, the current non-resident fee is included in every resident student's room fee. All students who live outside of the University Residence Halls, such as commuters, Brown Association of Cooperative Housing residents, and off-campus students have this fee posted to their bill as a separate line item. Brown University established this budgeting process over 20 years ago in order to support these important student activities and services.

The follow two emails have been sent to all students eligible to apply for off campus (rising junior and rising senior):

Rising Junior E-mail:

****Do not sign a lease to live off campus until you receive written permission from Residential Life via e-mail****

Please read the information below if you are thinking of applying for off campus permission…

Dear ,

We hope that you are enjoying your summer.  According to our records, your current semester level indicates that you are eligible to apply for off-campus permission for the 2013-2014 academic year.  The online application process will begin Monday, September 10, 2012 at 8 a.m. and end on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at midnight (deadline for rising juniors).  This is the only time that rising juniors will be eligible to apply for off-campus permission.  After October 11, 2012, the application will close and rising juniors will not have another opportunity to apply for off-campus permission. You will be notified (as individuals or groups depending on how you apply) if you are approved to live off campus on October 16, 2012. If you do not receive approval on October 16, 2012 (via e-mail from Residential Life) you will be placed on a waitlist.  The waitlist will not be activated until after Housing Lottery in April.  Please keep in mind that you are not guaranteed to be approved for off campus while on the waitlist.  Therefore, do not sign a lease until you receive written approval via e-mail of your permission.  The off campus process is a rising senior driven process and there are limited spaces available for rising juniors.

Semester Levels 3 and 4 (rising juniors for Fall 2013) may apply as an individual or a group (group size cannot be larger than 12).  There are a limited number of spots that will be awarded based on a random lottery.  Do not sign a lease prior to receiving written approval via e-mail to live off campus.

There are a limited number of students approved to live off-campus each year; therefore, if you have any interest in living off-campus for the 2013-2014 academic year, please complete an application starting on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 8 a.m. and prior to October 11, 2012 at midnight (deadline for rising juniors) at Off Campus Application. If you are applying as a group, all members of the group must complete the on-line application prior to October 11, 2012 at midnight.  If a member of your group fails to complete the online application by the deadline of October 11, 2012, the application will be cancelled and they will not be eligible for off-campus permission for the 2013-2014 academic year.
