Special Housing Accommodations and Process
In compliance with Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Brown University students with documented disabilities may request special housing accommodations through Student and Employee Accessibility Services.
Off-Campus Policy
All students, including students with disabilities, are normally required to reside on campus for six semesters. Permission to reside off-campus is granted for students in accordance with procedures established by the Residential Life Office. In the case of accommodation requests by students with disabilities who otherwise are not eligible for off-campus permission, accommodations can usually be met within the on-campus housing environment.
Process
In order for student disability accommodation requests to be considered, students must first be registered with the Student and Employee Accessibility Services (SEAS). In order to register with SEAS, students must complete the following process:
- Contact SEAS and complete an information and release form.
- Provide SEAS with current documentation supporting and verifying the qualifying disability. Documentation must be in writing from an appropriate provider (physician, psychiatrist, etc.) who isn't a relative. All documentation must clearly support the need for the requested accommodations.
- Submit in writing your specific request for housing accommodations.
- Meet with the SEAS Coordinator to discuss accommodations requested.
- Complete the process by the stated deadline.
The SEAS Coordinator, in conjunction with the appropriate University providers, determines whether or not the documented disability qualifies for the accommodations requested. If the request does not qualify, SEAS will notify the student directly. If the request is determined to qualify, it will be forwarded to the Office of Residential Life. Residential Life will make every effort to find appropriate and reasonable placement as recommended by SEAS. Students will be notified in writing of their housing placement.
