Available Housing
A preliminary list of available housing, along with any designations, will be posted in North Wayland Foyer and on the Residential Council web site prior to the first night of the Lottery. The final list of available rooms will be available at the Lottery. Each year, a number of suites, apartments, and rooms are removed from the Lottery for a variety of reasons, including residence hall renovations, Disability Support Services (DSS), and squatting.
Brown offers a variety of housing during the Lottery. Below is a list of housing options that may be available during the Lottery (for more housing options, please see Special Interest Housing).
Gender-Specific Housing
For logistical purposes, including bathroom configuration, certain rooms and suites will be assigned a gender. The majority of these rooms will be assigned outside of the Lottery process. The application to request gender-specific housing is available on the forms page and must be returned to Residential Life no later than super Deadline Day (see the Residential Calendar).
Residential Life reserves the right to assign any rooms a gender prior to the Housing Lottery. Any room assigned a gender will be marked as such on the display of available housing during the Lottery. Those rooms or suites not assigned a gender may be selected by groups entirely of either gender. Exceptions to this are all the suites designated as optionally gender neutral (see below) that can be selected by all-male, all-female, or gender-mixed groups.
Gender Neutral Housing
All suites and apartments in Young Orchard, Vartan Gregorian Quad (New Dorm), Morriss Hall, Wriston Quad, Barbour Apartments, and the Graduate Center Towers and will have the option of being gender neutral. In addition, Woolley Hall Suite 109 and all Minden suites (i.e. sets of rooms with independent access to the hallway, not the multi-room triples) are designated as gender neutral optional. These suites are made available in the Lottery and selected in the exact same manner as all other suites - a gender neutral optional designation simply means that either a single-sex group, or a group containing both males and females may select these suites.
Please keep in mind the inherent risk in entering a segment of the Lottery in a mixed gender group. Should all suites that have the gender neutral optional designation be selected by the time a mixed gender group's number is called, the group will be unable to select any housing unless it can divide up into single-sex groups and select separate suites or rooms. Rising sophomores should especially keep this fact in mind, as in recent years, almost all the gender neutral optional housing was selected in the lottery before the first all-sophomore groups had a chance to pick. There are, however, many gender neutral optional suites designated as sophomore-only in Grad Center Tower D.
Sophomore-Only Housing
Several residence halls or rooms and suites within residence halls have been designated as sophomore-only housing. Sophomore-only housing can often be a social atmosphere, as the majority of the students in the area are in the same class.
To be eligible to select sophomore-only housing, a student must have an anticipated semester level less than 5 for the Fall semester following the Lottery.
During the Housing Lottery, several rooms and suites will be designated as sophomore-only (these rooms and suites will also be noted on the display during the Lottery itself). The following areas are designated as sophomore-only:
- 111 Brown Street
- Caswell Hall
- Diman House
- Grad Center Tower D
- Harkness House
- New Pembroke #1
Winter Recess Housing
All residence halls are closed and locked for Winter Recess, except for the Graduate Center and Miller Hall. If you anticipate needing housing during winter break, please consider selecting housing in either Grad Center or Miller Hall. Residents of Littlefield Hall and Wayland House must remove or lock up their belongings during Winter Recess, as the two residence halls will be used to house athletes over the break.
For details on winter break housing, please see the Policies and Procedures page.
