A preliminary list of available housing will be posted on the Residential Council web site prior to the first night of the Lottery. The final list of available rooms will be available at the Lottery. Each year, a number of suites, apartments, and rooms are removed from the Lottery for a variety of reasons, including residence hall renovations, Student and Employee Accessibility Services (SEAS), and squatting.
Brown offers a variety of housing during the Lottery. Below is a list of housing options that may be available during the Lottery (for more housing options, please see Special Interest Housing).
For logistical purposes, including bathroom configuration, certain rooms and suites will be assigned a gender. The majority of these rooms will be assigned outside of the Lottery process. The application to request gender-specific housing is available on the forms page and must be returned to Residential Life no later than super Deadline Day (see the Residential Calendar).
Residential Life reserves the right to assign any rooms a gender prior to the Housing Lottery. Any room assigned a gender will be marked as such on the display of available housing during the Lottery. Those rooms or suites not assigned a gender may be selected by groups entirely of either gender. Exceptions to this are all the suites designated as optionally gender neutral (see below) that can be selected by all-male, all-female, or gender-mixed groups.
All suites and apartments in Young Orchard, Vartan Gregorian Quad, 315 Thayer St, Wriston Quad, Barbour Apartments, and the Graduate Center Towers have the option of being gender-neutral housing. In addition, Minden suites (i.e. sets of rooms with independent access to the hallway, not the multi-room triples) are designated as gender- neutral housing optional. Double rooms in Marcy, Goddard, Harkness, Hope College, Littlefield Hall, Caswell, New Pembroke #1, New Pembroke #2, New Pembroke #3 and New Pembroke #4 have the option of being gender-neutral housing.
These designated suites and double rooms are made available in the Housing Lottery and selected in the exact same manner as all other housing units - a gender- neutral optional housing designation simply means that either a single-gender group or mixed-gender group may select these rooms, suites, or apartments. The selection of gender neutral housing optional units will be by student choice only; no student will be assigned to a gender neutral living situation without his or her express consent.
Please keep in mind the inherent risk in entering the Lottery in a mixed gender group. Should all rooms that have the gender neutral optional designation be selected by the time a mixed gender group's number is called, the group will be unable to select any housing unless it can divide up into single-sex groups and select separate suites or rooms.
Several residence halls or rooms and suites within residence halls have been designated as sophomore-only housing. Sophomore-only housing can often be a social atmosphere, as the majority of the students in the area are in the same class.
To be eligible to select sophomore-only housing, a student must have an anticipated semester level less than 5 for the Fall semester following the Lottery. Groups that contain students who are a rising semester level 5 or higher are ineligible to select sophomore only housing.
During the Housing Lottery, several rooms and suites will be designated as sophomore-only (these rooms and suites will also be noted on the display during the Lottery itself). The following areas are designated as sophomore-only:
- 111 Brown Street
- Machado House
- Plantation House
- West House
- New Pembroke 3/4
- Caswell Hall
- Buxton House
- Chapin House
- Diman House
- Goddard House

- Sears House
- Wayland House (3rd and 4th floors)
